Elena listened to her mother’s voice and repeated the last words, “Believe one day we will all be
together.” Her eyes closed and the visions of her sick puppy dimmed in her mind. Her big, brown eyes,
her listless body.
“We need cake,” noted Alberto, the sweet smell calling him urgently.
“Mom, I --- have to go. Jenna is catering a dinner for the Jerry’s investment group,” said
Carmen sadly.
Alma pursed her lips in disappointment and said. “Ok.”
“I Love You Momma, - always and forever,” said Elena, tinged in sweetness and sorrow.
“Happy Birthday Mama,” said Carmen, leaving the facetime.
“I’ll get the cake!” announced Alberto - after eating five enchiladas, about to leave his hand print
of sauce on the cake box.
“I’ll serve you,” required Esperanza, taking the cake out of the box.
“Let me do it – you got enchilada sauce on your dress!” said Fabiola.
“Where?” asked Esperanza, spinning around and around, looking at her backside.
“Right there,” said Fabiola jokingly.
Esperanza went around one more time – to make sure, “I don’t see it at all.” Wryly remarking,
“My sister was waiting for you,” pointing at Alma.
