“We have to do a complete blood work to see if her kidneys are functioning, if she suffered any
damage.”
“How are you going to get the rest of her fur off?” asks Alma.
“Inch by inch,” responds Dr. Julio as he begins to cut. “Get the upper body first, for the blood work.”
Consuelo starts cutting with precision and hands Elena a smile. She labors on the puppy for at
least twenty minutes.
“This is really—tough, I can’t get any more done.”
I could work on this hair for you, “Alma adds in, “I’m a seamstress.” Reaching into her worn
black purse, flashing a silver pair, “I always carry a pair of scissors.”
“That’s fine Alma. We have enough to do the blood work,” says Dr. Julio as he wraps the orange
strip around her left front paw. He inserts the syringe and begins drawing out blood. He soon has five
vials, filled half-way.
“Gilberto, run the blood urea nitrogen, albumin, creatine, glucose and total protein on this
puppy.” Handing him the vials and her chart, “I need to see if she has any kidney damage.”
While he is cutting more fur off the puppy, “This is our in-house lab and I will have the results in an
hour.”
“Two hours – I am still working Paco.”
“Ok two hours. Alma and –“
“Elena.”
Dr. Julio continues cutting on her hind legs while Consuelo goes up her stomach, making sure she
escapes this prison of affliction. The searing torment from her last bit of mangled fur is gone with a final
snip from Consuélo.
Consuelo, smiling, holds up a king-size coat of matted fur and declares, “I got it all.”
Dr. Julio points to the table. Another huge pile of fur remains on the table. The puppy, an
uneven patchwork quilt, surrenders herself for more treatment. He holds her little face and moves it side
