“GET DR. JULIO!”
Alma, still recovering from the walk, hobbled along after Elena.
Her mind tried to comprehend the fate of her puppy as she zoomed past each exam room, their
colors were painted in pastel yellow or blue. Each room faintly entered her peripheral vision, like fleeting
pictures of a dream-like state. Her mind tried to comprehend a hand painted message but she could only
grasp these few words: “If there are no dogs”… and the rest a blur.
The puppy was coming in and out of consciousness and did not fight getting her temperature
taken. Ramon put the thermometer in her, weighed her; and then noted her chart.
They entered exam room 3 – with the puppy half-breathing.
Dr. Julio dashed in, looking over Ramon who had laid out the puppy on the cold metal examining
bed and returned to his post. After analyzing and poring over the puppy with what seemed an eternity
but was a minute or two in actuality, Dr. Julio Cesar Ramon Gonzales Figueroa De La Pena spoke.
“Come with me. We are taking her to pre - op. She only has a few minutes.”
Dr. Julio picks up her puppy and hustles to his pre-op area, Elena and Alma striding behind him.
At six foot-two, with almond brown eyes and wavy hair that reaches his shoulder. Gold-rimmed glasses
and big moustache, frame his olive-skinned face. His white coat bears his full name on it: Dr. Julio
Cesar Ramon Gonzalez Figueroa De La Pena, in royal blue letters.
Alma taken aback by this six foot - two vet. She begs, “Can you heal – my granddaughter’s – her
dog?”
“What happened to this dog?” fleeting down the hallway.
“I found her -- ,“ declares Elena running to keep up with Dr. Julio, “—in the street.”
Pulling up his glasses, “Someone put wire around her mouth to stop her from barking. She is
severely dehydrated.”
