Alma, Elena and the puppy zip down Morelos street. Weaving in and out of the crowds of
shoppers. Whiffing the tacos al carbon, the puppy opens her eyes wider, but not fast enough to cinch it -from the taco vendor. Alma, leading her tribe, her laser focus of saving this puppy –creating ripples of
determination on her face.
A woman with two children dashes out of her way. Alma swishes her torn
black purse back and forth, taking audacious steps, inhaling gulps of air to drive herself forward, dividing
the crowds of people, making an inroad for their heartfelt desire.
“Just a few minutes more,” cries Elena to her puppy.
Elena holds her puppy firmly in place, bouncing with every stride, turning right on Zaragoza and
bolting behind Alma.
Swish! Another couple and their baby leap out of the way of Alma and her black purse. Not
stopping to even take a breath.
“Here it is,” says Alma, stopping cold.
Elena opens the door to Dr. Julio’s, a blue building with big letters: VETERINARIA on it.
Alma, doubles over in pain, takes a few seconds – to recover from this walk.
“Are you ok?” asks Elena.
“Yes, -- weeee are here fooour your puppppy,” nodding, Alma opens the door.
Elena, quick to count; sees that fourteen people are waiting. Eight dogs, a miniature pig and one
pony ahead of her. The number ten hanging in her head, she felt a surge of desperation. Enrique, a
student at the University of Guadalajara, brought in all eight of his rescues, being housed at his father’s
20- acre ranch in La Provedencia. Seven members of his soccer team are each holding a dog.
Signing in his doggies, “Nacho, an all-white shitzu, Benito, a Black Lab, Chata, a white husky,
Lobo, a black and white Husky, a German shepherd – I don’t have a name yet, Tigre and Torro, twin
black labs, and Ciro a cocker spaniel. That’s it.”
“How did you get them all to come with you?” asks Ramon the receptionist.
