Elena sadly sits down on the bench with her puppy, hope draining from her body. She looks down
at her puppy, softly nestling it in her arms, rubbing her tummy. The puppy looks weakly back at Elena.
Alma spots her prayer group and walks to a gathering of four women in the church.
“Estella,” says Alma, waiving with purpose, “I have an emergency ---“
Turning around to see Alma, “What is ---it?”
“My daughter’s puppy is near death. I need --- a vet. The best vet --- in all of Guadalajara.”
“A vet – a vet --- go to –Dr. Julio - he is on Zaragoza Street,” replies Estella.
“I went to Dr. Julio. He saved my horse,” adds in Ramona.
“But I have a dog,” adds Alma.
“When did you get a dog?” interrupts Fabiola.
Esperanza chimes in “Go to my sister, Yolanda Ramos on Obregon Street.”
Estella, shaking her head, “Don’t go to her ---“
“My sister is the best,” swords in Esperanza.
“No-she is not. She has turned into a money - grubbing little pig now that she has her
veterinary license,” Estella swords back.
“She is not a pig,” retorts Esperanza. “She does treat pigs, coincidentally.”
“Medicine that costs her two hundred pesos, she charges one thousand pesos.” Waving her
hand hysterically. “She strikes at your heart when you are the most vulnerable,” argues Estella.
“Don’t go to her. Go to Dr. Julio. Zaragoza Street,” declares Ramona, “A blue building. We’ll
see you on your 59th. I need Rafaela’s tutu by ---”
“I am almost finished with it,” says Alma as she embraces Estella, “Thank you very much.”
Frowning directly at Esperanza, Alma turns to Ramona, Estella and Fabiola “I’ll see you on Sunday,” and
darts back to get Elena.
Grabbing Elena’s hand, “We only have a few minutes. I don’t’ know – if she is going to make it.”
“Hold on – little puppy---we found someone to help you,” giving it a little kiss.
