“Here is the gauze,” said Matias as he dabs off the blood left from the wire.
The puppy has a crevice of skin left by tightness of the wires, leaving pink, raw flesh, about an
inch wide, across her face and under her jaw.
“Your puppy is really sick. I don’t know if she is going to make it,” said Juan.
“She has to got to make it. Please. Take me home.”
Elena carefully gathers the puppy in her arms, rushes into Juan’s old blue pick- up.
“Let’s go,” says Juan. He drives Elena to the one bedroom apartment she shares with her
Abuelita, on Avenida Niños Heroes, one mile away from downtown Guadalajara.
Elena blazes up the three flights of stairs to their apartment.
“ABUELITA, ABUELITA – HE-LP ME PLEASE!–“
“I was going to pick you up from La Academia, your skool—“
“--I found her – “
“What did you find?”
“This – puppy --- she’s very, very sick.”
Abuelita surveys the puppy, keenly aware of the devastation on her body.
“This puppy is near death. Give her to me.”
Elena gently hands over the puppy to her, blood dripping from her wound.
Abuelita nestles the devastated puppy in her arms.
Alberto, their chubby neighbor and the uncle she never had, knocks on the door and asks,
“Are you making chilaquiles?”
“Alberto—pasate – come in.”
Elena runs to the door and gives Alberto a hug.
“We have to take her to the vet,” said Alma, studying the puppy.
