Act Boldly
“At the client site, their code versioning and deployment discipline had broken down. They had
controlled source code, but were unsure how this related to the code running in the production
environment. This was due to rogue deployments from developer machines.
I went to the Change Advisory Board (CAB) and announced that rather than perform the task
of comparing and analysing every deliverable, I would re-deploy every bit of code from source
control out to Production and deal with any exceptions, personally. This bold move highlighted
a handful of inconsistencies, which took two days to resolve. Backed up with improved rigour
around deployments, the customer now has a solid code base to develop and maintain.”
Story Telling
“When I tell people that I am developing illustrations, narratives and stories to sell a strategy,
I receive comments from people, surprised that a client would accept this, as opposed to a
traditional proposal. When I show them what I am doing, the feedback is always the same; they
see this as inspiring and wish they worked for such a forward-thinking company. I work for such
a company; my stories are authentic, and I know we are leading the new generation in ways of
working. My future is exciting.”
Consider all angles
“I was asked to investigate a process that had caused the client issues over many years.
The daily run process was taking close to 12 hours to run and was impacting on business
operations. Others had tried to unravel the process in the past and declared it impossible.
To make matters worse, all code annotations and commentary were in Spanish.
I chose to run the process as-is and watch its effect on the database server. The database
server immediately complained of missing indexes contributing to slowness. New indexes were
quick to implement, which had a low impact on the database and reduced one whole section
of the process from 8 hours down to 20 minutes. The customer was thrilled with both the
improved outcome and the simplicity of approach.”
The envy of others
“When talking to people about where I work, the culture we are developing and the growth
we are experiencing, they are often surprised that a company like this exists in Adelaide! Most
express a view to me that they would like to be part of a company so refreshing and exciting!”
