Challenge the norm
“Our client set up separate projects across two business units to provide a technology
solution and process improvements in both Corporate Finance and Assets. Innodev
project managers collaborated to identify significant efficiency savings in combining
implementation of the new finance software platform.
In working with the preferred solution vendor, the PMs developed an innovative delivery
approach that would result in significant savings, quicker delivery and more functionality in
the tool. It took over a month of resilience and challenging risk adverse stakeholders, but
the business eventually agreed we’d identified a best practice way forward and authorised
the change to a new way of delivering outcomes.”
Add value in every way
“Adding value to the client has seen an initial short-term engagement turn into a longer
engagement. I initially started the short-term gig with the client to help them uplift their
project governance, planning and execution. They liked the initial paper so much they
asked me to manage a project that had been struggling for a couple of years. I took stock,
set up project governance and methods, and planned the remaining work.
The project was delivered into production in six weeks, plus another couple of weeks
troubleshooting. The executive liked the result and engaged me to manage another project
that had been struggling for three years. I set up projected governance and methods, plus
planned the remaining work. The project was delivered into production in about three
months.
There was the usual ‘herding kittens’ that project managers need to deal with. Instituting
project governance structures, so there was an engaged sponsor, project board and SMEs
was key. Planning, regular reporting, engagement with the project team and the business
representatives were also important components. Facilitating the conversations, instilling
a sense of urgency and ensuring the team did what was needed to keep the momentum
going. Overall the implemented system is intuitive and easy to use, streamlines several
business processes and delivers tangible business benefits.
Executives implemented a number of pieces of advice from my original report. Changes
included setting up an ICT governance committee, a change advisory board and change
management processes being implemented, a project management framework, which
is now in place, basic project management awareness training, which has now been
provided to staff, system testing that has been employed for the first time in this agency
and the use of Agile techniques, which were employed on the project.”
Okay so...
HOW
would you
do it?
